ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Attempts to reduce localized adiposity through diet or exercise alone are often unsuccessful, and liposuction remains one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures in North America with over 400,000 procedures performed in 2006 [1]. Though it is a common surgical cosmetic procedure, liposuction is not without shortcomings [2], including blood loss, bruising, and long operating time. The term liposuction is imprecise because it regroups the following techniques: suction-assisted lipoplasty (SAL), ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty, power-assisted lipoplasty (PAL), and laser-assisted lipolysis (LAL).
