ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the wave polarization properties and potential applications of twisted metamaterials for broadband polarizer designs. Sub-wavelength engineered inclusions arrayed in a periodic lattice and designed to collectively support exotic electromagnetic properties are called metamaterials. A twisted metamaterial is an array of particles in which a sequential translation and rotation about the twist axis produces a structure indistinguishable from the original structure. An important feature of dispersion diagrams is the dependency of the bandwidth of the stopbands on the twist angle. A periodic structure with a supercell composed of three rods has been numerically studied using CST to obtain its dispersion diagram. The chapter aims at optimizing the structure to maximize the bandwidth for circular polarizers. An important aspect of the twisted metamaterials is their ability to support one pair of propagating modes with a strong sense of handedness. This can be used to design circular polarizers with large bandwidths.
