ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the topic of proton, alcohol, and water

transport mechanism, and the rational design of proton electrolyte

membranes (PEMs). In the first section, we give a brief background

description of PEMs. And then, we discuss the types of PEMs. In the

third section, the proton, alcohol, and water transport mechanisms

is discussed and design procedure of PEMs is proposed. In the

fourth section, we give an example of rational design of PEMs,

including the study of transport characteristics, the screen and

choice of functional groups, and the proof-of-concept experiments.

In the last section, we summarize the major points covered in the

chapter.
