ABSTRACT

Assessment is the process of careful measurement and evaluation leading to an informed decision about possible interventions designed to improve functional ability and maximise independence – it should include re-evaluation to determine outcome. Timely and appropriate assessment should lead to interventions that improve the quality of life for patients and carers. Comprehensive assessment is time consuming but essential if we are to provide the best possible care to the person with Parkinson's disease (PD). This should cover physical, psychological, social, environmental and quality-of-life domains. PD is a progressive neurological disorder with a long clinical evolution. Early stages of PD may not require drug treatment; the decision to implement any therapeutic intervention will be determined by assessing the impact of PD on the individual. Comprehensive assessment becomes increasingly important with disease progression and the frequent interplay of other co-morbidities. Team working is essential in providing a quality service to the PD sufferer and their carers.
