ABSTRACT

In this work, a concept for the detection of cracks in plate structures is presented. This method is based on strains measured at different locations on the surface of a structure and the application of the dislocation technique. Solving the inverse problem with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, this allows the identification of crack position parameters, such as length, location, angles, and the calculation of stress intensity factors (SIF). Numerical as well as physical experiments are performed using pre-cracked plates made of the aluminum alloy Al-7075. The parameter identification shows satisfactory results.
