ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the reclamation and management of acid soils in India while briefly discussing acid sulfate soils. It may be noted that permanent reclamation of acid soils in the real sense may not be achievable and only course is to manage these soils for higher productivity. The management of these soils should aim to correct the acidity by applying amendments to: Reduce the toxicity of aluminum, manganese and iron; improve the nutrient supplying capacity; and to manipulate the agricultural practices for obtaining optimum crop yields. One of the most widely accepted practices for reclamation of soil acidity is liming. Cultivation of acid tolerant crops/varieties is another option, where liming is un-economical or unavailable. Prevention of oxidation is the only way to prevent active acid sulfate soil formation. Neutralization of such soils with liming material is uneconomical, but it can provide bases for better crop growth.
