ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various technological options to avoid or blunt the adverse effects of saline irrigation. All the options are categorized into groups. Options in the crop management group are selection of salt tolerant crops, crops varieties, application of saline water only at tolerant growth stages and improved cultural practices such as high seed rate to take care of likely mortality, seeding under conserved moisture and application of post germination irrigation, etc. The chapter presents some of the management technologies that can be adopted to live with the salts in the irrigation water or the irrigated lands. The monsoon climatic conditions in India and many other countries provide opportunities to adopt low cost options to live with the salts. Increasing scarcity of irrigation water, need to manage water logging and soil salinity due to rising water table in irrigation commands and need to make efficient use of large reserves of saline ground water.
