ABSTRACT

Climate change and urbanization are two of the most important issues facing the world today. Associated with them are challenges that world leaders must confront: poverty reduction and sustainable development. These must remain the center of society’s global priorities. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), urban areas now account for more than 71% of energyrelated global greenhouse gases (GHGs). This percentage, which is linked to the growth of urbanization and population density, will increase to 76% by 2030. Thus, energy-related emissions are the largest single source of GHGs when looking at allocated allowances for the areas in question (Hoornweg et al., 2011).
