ABSTRACT
With a population of just over 10 million, Rio de Janeiro is the second most populous city in Brazil after São Paulo. However, Rio’s rate of urbanization (97%) is greater (Confalonieri et al., 2009). The challenges Rio faces are unregulated settlements in hazardous areas where the urban poor live, industrial waste, and sewage removal (De Sherbinin et al., 2007).
