ABSTRACT Optimization of wastewater treatment processes is not an easy task due to the complexity and variations in the organic contents of dierent wastewaters. Like many other real world problems, treatment of wastewater requires making dierent decisions and setting the optimum operational parameters that are con icting in nature. Evolutionary algorithms are of interest in optimizing the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to generate Paretooptimal solutions by spontaneously minimizing and/or maximizing dierent desirable and undesirable properties. Dierent types of optimization tools have been developed and applied in predicting and simulating wastewater treatment processes. is study reviews dierent types of evolutionary algorithms as a computer-based and biologically inspired optimization algorithm for solving continuous, noncontinuous, non-dierentiable, and multimodal optimization problems based on natural selection principles. Dierent studies on real-world applications of dierent evolutionary algorithms for nding global optimum solutions that could be used for making decisions during plant design and operation of WWTPs have been reviewed.
