ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the working principle and structure of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) based on conventional membranes such as Nafion and PBI membranes is briefly introduced first. The emphasis of the chapter is on the development and status of various mesoporous structured PEMs, including polymeric and inorganic materials. The rationale for developing mesoporous structured PEMs is discussed, followed with the detailed review of the advances in mesoporous structured materials as PEMs including organic, inorganic and MOF and organic-inorganic membranes. Finally, the prospect of mesoporous structured materials as PEMs to operate at high temperature and low humidity conditions for next generation of PEMFCs is discussed.
