ABSTRACT

Scene investigation is of paramount importance in any medicolegal inquiry of death. As in clinical medicine where a comprehensive medical history provides 50%–75% of the information necessary for a diagnosis, scene investigation provides the forensic pathologist with the majority of information about a particular case. Authority and primary responsibility for crime scene investigation remain with law enforcement agencies. However, the ME/ coroner has legal authority and responsibility to conduct a medicolegal investigation and to secure the remains of any victims.
