ABSTRACT

In 2014, over 1 million fires were reported in the United States (National Fire Protection Association, 2016). Approximately 2200 deaths in the United States per year are attributable to burns or injuries sustained in destructive fires (National Safety Council, 2015). A significant amount of fires occur  in the home, and the most common lethal fires are attributable to smoking in the home (National Fire Protection Association, 2016). Other causes of residential fires include defective electrical wiring, improper use of electric heaters, kitchen and cooking accidents, and children playing with matches.
