ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on navigation system and flight control system requirements for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs). Comprehensive technical concepts are presented on development and practical implementation with major emphasis on system reliability and accuracy of navigation and automatic flight control systems (AFCSs). The navigation system and flight control system should be treated like twin brothers that cannot function or survive without the help of the other. Because of the tremendous increase of UAV activities in the sky, it is very important to develop a reliable and accurate navigation system and AFCS for security and survivability on the ground and in the air. The comprehensive review of research reports and technical papers by the author on the subject concerned seems to reveal that research scientists at the National Aviation University in Ukraine have developed a prototype navigation and practical implementation of required critical system elements. An integrated navigation system (INS) was designed, developed, and tested in a UAV with specific weight, size, and other relevant parameters. Published technical papers [1] indicate that the efficiency and functioning of the INS have significantly improved because of innovation techniques.
