ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter provides a brief historical discussion on the use of small organic compounds as catalysts for synthetic transformations. The author also presents his views on what is meant to be an organocatalyst and discusses why moving away from the transient formation of C–N bonds may be beneficial for the development of new synthetic transformations.
