ABSTRACT

This chapter covers three classes of nonnitrogenous organocatalytic reactions that were not covered in the other chapters. It opens with a discussion on the use of ketone catalysts in epoxidation reactions. It then moves on to discuss the use of N-heterocyclic carbene catalysts as acyl anion equivalents before concluding with the use of tertiary phosphines as nucleophilic catalysts. Coverage includes historical examples before moving on to more recent work. Important structural features of the catalysts or relevant intermediates are highlighted when appropriate. Nonasymmetric examples are included along with stereoselective reactions. Each section includes a brief discussion on the development of these catalysts and reactions in the context of natural product synthesis.
