ABSTRACT
The combination of carbohydrates with lipids and proteins forming glycolipids and glycoproteins is important for functional roles in cell membranes (ceramides, glycosphingolipids), hormonal synthesis (human chorionic gonadotropin, erythropoietin), transport molecules (transferrin, ceruloplasmin), structural molecules (collagens), and immunogenic molecules (immunoglobulins, histocompatibility antigens).
