ABSTRACT

The pinnae and external ear canals in ferrets are fairly small. Many breeders tattoo the ears of the ferrets. In the USA, one major breeder puts two dots in the right pinna signifying neuter/spay and demusking (Fig. 15.1). A breeder in Canada does a stripe in the right ear. Laboratory animal sources tend to put

in small metal clip ear tags with individual numbers (Fig. 15.2). The pinna sometimes becomes infected or traumatised around these clips. Ferrets may tear them out; resulting in damage to the pinna.
