ABSTRACT

The practice of eco-agriculture in the state farms significantly influences the path of agricultural development in all of China. The state farms in Heilongjiang Province have three characteristics: intensive agriculture, large-scale monoculture production, and high mechanization. The state farms of Heilongjiang Province have become an important strategic base for commodity grain and food production, as they offer the largest scale, greatest degree of modernization, and most comprehensive production capacity in China. A special management group for the ecological construction was set up within the Bureau of State Farms. Similar management structures were also set up in all of the state farms in the region. The goal of state farms is to pay equal attention to both economic development and ecological protection. Protecting natural conservation areas and protecting prime farmland are clearly defined as the bottom line. Construction of the ecological demonstration region in Heilongjiang state farms began in 2000.
