ABSTRACT

Beaches and their associated surf zones are hazardous locations. The physical, biological and, in places, chemical hazards associated with beaches have been well documented by Short [1,2]. However, these hazards only become a concern to people when they venture onto the beach and in particular into the water. At that point the combination of a hazardous environment and human interaction produces a level of risk. The greater the hazard and number of people, the greater the risk.
