ABSTRACT

As the oldest living human culture on earth, Indigenous Australians were the first to harvest, process, prepare and consume the native species across the Australian continent. Fast forward to 2015 and what we can now see is an Australian Native Food Industry that is transitioning from being a novelty to a part of the mainstream Australian food culture. Increasing public awareness is our greatest tool to extend existing research into the practical application for Australian native plants in agriculture and horticulture, product development, supply chain management and marketing. The Australian Native Foods Industry Limited is in conjunction with the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, and many of our trailblazing growers around Australia have identified 13 priority species with commercial potential in recent years. While some of these have become well known through commercial product development and the creation of recipes featuring these species, others are still relatively unknown.
