ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the use of bio-natural components in the mix design of vibrated blocks for masonry walls or for precast elements. The mix design include new ingredients such as cork granules and hemp fibers to substitute polymeric elements or expanded clay; the effect of Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) as binder is also studied. In particular, the experimental campaign considers seven mix design types. The cork and hemp fibers ensure reduction of carbon impact; NHL with cork and hemp performs an effective binding of the mix design and protects the bio-natural components from molds or fungi. The chapter discusses the preliminary phase of an experimental campaign is reported: mechanical tests are addressed to evaluate new mix design types for precast masonry units. These masonry units can be applied on elements for separating walls, thermally insulated façades and pedestrian pavements. A series of flexural and compression tests up to collapse were performed in laboratory 28 days after the blocks manufacture.
