ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a satisfactory response of the displacement-sensitive non-structural masonry, preventing excessive damage in line with common performance requirements for different design limit states, the evaluation of expected inter-storey drift demands for actual building configurations is essential. It presents a simplified procedure for the evaluation of expected inter-storey drift demands for Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings with masonry infills, based on related values for corresponding bare configurations. Following European design procedures the response of ordinary RC buildings subjected to seismic actions is usually evaluated by means of equivalent static or multimodal spectral analyses, performed on linear elastic models. Values of elastic stiffness assigned to each storey along the height of a RC structure can be approximated based on the elastic analysis of a bare frame structural model using the equivalent static force approach. The seismic response of RC buildings is commonly evaluated based on bare structural configurations constituted only of RC structural elements.
