ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the possible implementations for repair of masonry structures. Fiber reinforced polymers are composite materials made of fibers such as Carbon, Aramid and/or Glass, and a resin matrix. Aramid fibers are a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers. They are used mainly in aerospace and military applications, for ballistic- rated body armor fabric and ballistic composites, in bicycle tires, and as an asbestos substitute. Aramid fibres are distinguished with respect to Carbon fibres, for the remarkable impact strength. The use of hybrid system therefore tends to exploit the advantages of the Aramid fibers in the improvement of the structural behavior when the system is subjected to continuous vibrational states. Different types of Aramid fibers where considered, characterized by different values of the elastic modulus, equal respectively to 70, 140 and 160 GPa.
