ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive study on the seismic performance of lightweight Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks with thin-layer mortar as well as the use of horizontally reinforced AAC masonry with truss bed-joint reinforcement. The experimental campaign provided the necessary information to set up a reliable numerical model then extensively used to assess the seismic performance of a number of prototype masonry buildings with different characteristics. The chapter presents a comprehensive study on the seismic performance of two innovative construction technologies, both made of AAC blocks with thin-layer mortar. The first solution considers lightweight AAC blocks, that allow to significantly enhance insulation properties of buildings. Seismic qualification of new structural systems is mandatory. Design recommendations allowing to achieve safety levels consistent with those required for other masonry types complying with seismic standard requirements have to be established through a specific seismic performance assessment.
