ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the adoption and implementation of Eurocodes in Sri Lanka, especially Eurocode 6 (EC6) for design of masonry structures. Sri Lanka is a small developing country and to date structural engineers have been using British Standards (BS) as guidelines for design of masonry structures. In order to highlight the main differences, comparisons are made between the design approaches recommended by EC6 and those in the previous BS 5628. The search for unification of structural design standards across the European countries has led to the introduction of a series of technical Eurocodes. Most of the masons are self-taught in the industry, therefore proper quality control guidelines should be introduced in the national annex for more efficient practice in masonry execution. Therefore incorporating local variation in constitutive materials and construction practice in masonry design are the main challenges in practicing Eurocode in Sri Lanka.
