ABSTRACT

A Since the international society paid attention to the issue of global warming, huge efforts was made by governments and environmental institutes to persuade designers and construction firms into adopting green building concept to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, since the construction industry is one of the main emitters. In Malaysia, the greenhouse gas emission is still rising, although the government has made many steps regarding the matter. This study investigate the awareness of engineering students those who are expected to lead the construction industry in the future regarding the implementation of green buildings in Malaysia. From the survey results, only thirty-three percent of the participants were aware of the existence of a green building assessment tool in Malaysia while only ten percent of them had a positive view of it. This leads to the conclusion that more efforts should be done to educate the students about the importance of implementing Green Building Index (GBI) and its essential role in the future of Malaysian environment, economy and society. Moreover, this study compare between Malaysia and other countries regarding its rating aspects of GBI where it was found that all the aspect are similar with other countries and there are items that exist in other countries, which might be beneficial to be added to Malaysian GBI.
