ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of an inspection campaign with the aim of condition evaluation of more than one thousand of elastomeric bridge bearings under service on Iran’s state highway bridges constructed before 1990. It is the first comprehensive survey and filed investigation of this kind. The work was done through visual inspection, analysis of existing bridge maintenance data, condition evaluation and replacement of a significant portion of the inspected bearings. Inspection surveys and analysis of the extracted data identified the problems and the main causes and mechanisms of damages as-well-as the merits and potential improvement of performance of each one of the inspected elastomeric bearings. Replacement of the damaged bearings was performed based on the results of this stage, although has been excluded from this paper.
