ABSTRACT

Bridges are a very critical part of a country’s infrastructure and many uncertainties surround important factors determining the serviceability and deterioration of bridges, thus, they require continues monitoring to ensure their functionality. Several damage indicators have been used for detecting the bridge status, such as the change in bridge natural frequency and bridge apparent profile. In this paper, the time history curvature under a passing vehicle is introduced as an alternative bridge damage indicator. The time history curvature for a bridge is the change in slope per unit length of distance along the bridge with respect to time. The result of time history curvature in moving force over a beam simulation shows the improvement of accuracy on spotting the location of the bridge damage. The bridge is represented as 1D Euler–Bernoulli beam element. Two bridge damage models are used in this research.
