ABSTRACT
Germany needs a reliable road network. To achieve this, the condition of road bridges and other civil engineering structures on the road network must be known and continually revised to ensure that prompt remedial action can be taken as required. In addition to regular visual inspections of structures in accordance with DIN 1076 [DIN, 1999], new innovative procedures provide a broad range of potentials in the categories of access, image capture and image processing technologies. These potentials now require systematic evaluation and preparation for operational implementation.
