ABSTRACT

The NHS pension scheme bases all transfers on cash equivalence tables computed by the Government Actuary's Department. Anyone transferring to an occupational pension scheme must join the new scheme within 12 months of leaving the NHS pension scheme and apply for a transfer within 12 months of joining the new scheme. A loss of accrued service on transfer is less likely to arise if the transfer is between pension schemes that are members of the 'public sector transfer club'. Dr J, a male doctor, transferred from the NHS Scheme to the Universities Superannuation Scheme and back again. If a member has two or more years NHS pension scheme membership before 6 April 1988, this pre-1988 service must be preserved in the NHS scheme until NHS employment ends. Any transfer will therefore be based on benefits earned since 6 April 1988 only.
