ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction and overview of the key issues involved in older men's mental health and well-being. It focuses on the needs of isolated and excluded older men who are at risk of depression, suicide and self-harm. The chapter discusses some examples of both local and national initiatives that aim to address the needs of this group of older men, as well as practical tips and guidance on how to work more effectively with older men with mental health needs. It looks at how the challenges can be overcome, with some examples of organisations and projects which are attempting to do this. The Equality Bill is of particular significance for people working in the field of mental health because historically mental health services have used an age threshold of 65 to differentiate between services for younger and older adults.
