ABSTRACT

Anger management is a form of counselling to help people cope with any angry feelings they may have that are affecting their health, work, social behaviour or personal relationships. Much attention has been given to the risk factors that have led to young men being over-represented among road crash fatalities, youth suicides, perpetrators of violence and many other negative statistics. Asking for help about anything can be difficult for many men – it puts them in a position of admitting vulnerability and feeling that it's a sign of weakness. Group work can be very positive, instilling hope and supporting a man by helping him to feel less alone – a problem shared is a problem halved – but many men express anxiety and show a real resistance to joining a group. A strengths-based approach recognises that each of us has a combination of risk factors and protective factors which shape development.
