ABSTRACT

Ambulatory teaching provides the opportunity to make a particularly accurate assessment of a learner's capabilities, as it is a realistic setting. Learners in all healthcare disciplines will benefit from educational experiences with ambulatory patients in settings that truly reflect the context that will comprise these learners' own future practices. Learning the manners, etiquette, courtesies and nuances of team cooperation and communication are vital competences for healthcare professionals. Preparing learners to practise in teams and in the difficult ambulatory situations by introducing them early and supporting their growing involvement is essential for building their confidence and competence. Helping learners to appreciate teamwork and to feel supported to participate in healthcare teams is a major role for teachers. Encouraging increasingly independent practice, self-directed learning and team-based continuing professional development are all valuable lessons for learners in an ambulatory care setting. Learners must experience taking responsibility, problem solving and working with other healthcare team members.
