chapter  13
Health and sustainable development
ByAnna Coote
Pages 7

This chapter explores the connections between health and sustainable development and the implications for public policy, focusing on public health and on the corporate activities of the National Health Service. From the start, an important strand of the Sustainable Development Commission's work has been concerned with health-related matters – demonstrating the benefits to health of sustainable practices and ways in which the pursuit of health and sustainable development can be mutually reinforcing. The Sustainable Development Commission is working with the Department of Health to develop a self-assessment model aimed at helping National Health Service organisations to judge how far they are contributing to good corporate citizenship and to develop their capacity to act as good corporate citizens. Like the public health agenda, the drive to promote 'good corporate citizenship' points to a potentially powerful, mutually reinforcing connection between health and sustainable development.
