ABSTRACT

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the airways and lung parenchyma, characterised by airflow obstruction, which is usually progressive and irreversible. In COPD the inflammation primarily affects the small airways and lung parenchyma. COPD incidence appears to have peaked and high prevalence of the disease remains a cause for concern. Primary care with improved knowledge and understanding of COPD management can provide a better and more cost-effective service. COPD exacerbations resulting in hospital admissions are the major contributor to the economic burden associated with the disease; one in every eight emergency medical admissions in the United Kingdom is due to COPD. National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has announced that the performance of general practitioners commissioners will be judged on improved quality indicators delivery in COPD. Deliver COPD care through a multidisciplinary approach - involve the healthcare assistant and community matron.
