ABSTRACT

Mental health quality indicators cover schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and other psychoses. Schizophrenia is strongly affected by many different genes that interact with each other and the environment. The lifetime risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is 0.8%. Schizophrenia affects both sexes equally, but psychosis is more common in women than men by 2:1. Schizophrenia has an insidious onset. Lifetime risk of suicide is around 5% in schizophrenia, the risk being highest in the first five years after the onset of illness. Cannabis is a modest risk factor for schizophrenia in vulnerable individuals. Obesity is common in patients with schizophrenia, particularly women. Identifying patients in need of mental healthcare, assessing their needs and proactively planning their care can only be possible if a proper register is maintained. There are two different ways by which patients are included in the mental health Quality and Outcomes Framework box.
