ABSTRACT

A teaching session needs to use resources which will engage learners in holistic process, followed by facilitation of their responses and a discussion of the practical application in medical work. Medical educators may find themselves teaching English language to international medical graduates and medical students from other countries. A holistic approach also values diversity and equality by recognising and valuing difference, by attempting to be part of a fair society, and by using opportunities to fulfil patients' needs in a non-judgmental and open way - with good communication skills. Understanding a patient's life, ideas and mythologies is an essential start to a holistic approach. For many young medical professionals old age is something to be endured in the dim and distant future - few consider what it is like to be old, but for some there may be painful experiences around health problems in an old relative.
