ABSTRACT

Careers were promised a great deal when the community care changes came into full effect on 1 April 1993. The majority of careers have noticed little if any improvement as a result of the 1993 community care changes and many believe services have actually deteriorated and/or become more expensive. Relief from caring is vital and because there is a wide variety of need there must be a wide variety of provision. Some careers want respite care provided in the home, others want it provided in some kind of residential setting or a mixture of both. The great majority of careers want help and advice from health professionals. Around 40" of careers see their general practice as the main source of information, help and advice. The Careers Act recommends social services to provide the environment of communication between providers that community care has so far lacked.
