ABSTRACT

Robertson Davies was a Canadian novelist, playwright, critic and journalist and was professor at Upper Canada College in Toronto, Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and Balliol College, Oxford. As an aspiring actor he played small roles at the Old Vic Repertory Company in London. After his initial interview with the director of the Jung Institute, but before he ever meets his therapist, Dr. Johanna Von Haller, David has a dream about leaving a college campus where he feels comfortable and safe, though he experiences the terrain outside as strange and frightening. Johanna Von Haller is a beautiful and elegant woman about Staunton's own age, who is happily married though aware that many men fall in love with her during their analyses. Von Haller questions whether she really is the woman in the dream, though she says that this woman is someone he loves and asks if this woman also loves him.
