ABSTRACT
Introduction Ethical theories employed in healthcare today tend to apply Western philosophical frameworks to family-life issues, such as contraception, abortion and infertility. However, the diversity of cultural and religious values found in contemporary Britain demand that physicians now be sensitive to the varied perspectives patients bring to professional decision making. Without appropriate social awareness among professionals, cultural differences can result in miscommunication, misunderstanding and less effective healthcare.
