ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a context and background to help readers understand the role of clinical director and directorate management. It also provides some sense of the history of the involvement of clinical staff in management, as well as some indication of the approaches adopted. In his letter to the Secretary of State, Sir Roy Griffiths suggested experiments in what he called 'management budgeting'. The Institute of Health Services Management’s Models of Clinical Management sets out some aspects of the existing management models, focusing not only on the structures but also on the processes by which such models worked and the roles and responsibilities taken by different individuals. From the beginning, the British Association of Medical Managers' mission was not only to support doctors who wanted to engage with the management of the NHS but to work with others on the broader agenda of the involvement of clinical staff in management.
