ABSTRACT

The life of a locum! Young, free and single! No ties, vast amounts of money, pick and choose work as you wish, stay in bed when you want to! Is it really as good as all that? It can be for the right person. Why do people choose to become locums? Those just out of their registrar year often want to look around different practices before deciding where to settle, or maybe they may choose to be a locum because it means that you can drop everything at a moment's notice and travel the world or grasp that job which you have been waiting for. More experienced general practitioners (GPs) may choose it because they have had enough of being tied to a partnership, because their partner is in a job that requires moving around a lot or because they have retired but just want to do a little work to remember the old days without the strain! However, others choose it as a long-term career option.
