ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the various models of care available to address the concerns and dilemmas faced by the individual and family. It seeks to highlight a range of strategies and practices that enhance access to treatment for individuals with diverse mental health–substance use needs. The book looks at improving access to psychological interventions and expresses that ‘professionals sometimes have to make the best of what they have. It outlines ways of improving access to psychological services. The book offers a working example within a stepped care pathway. It summarises the evidence for effectively working alongside young people. The book explores issues of mental health–substance use and looks at ways of influencing professional attitudes and values towards the individuals, and of enhancing knowledge and skills.
