ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development and implementation of cognitive behavioural integrated treatment (C-BIT) within Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust, UK. It focuses on a case study to illustrate some of the issues discussed so far. The chapter provides an overview of the C-BIT model and its clinical application. C-BIT is a manualised treatment model designed to enhance the confidence and skills of professionals to work collaboratively alongside individuals. The focus of C-BIT is to promote and maintain behaviour change in problematic drug/alcohol use and to facilitate the development of alternative strategies to enable service users to self-manage their mental health and substance use. C-BIT is based on core treatment components to enable professionals to provide a range of evidence-based interventions when working alongside individuals experiencing mental health–substance use problems. Cognitive strategies within C-BIT focus on substance-related beliefs, cognitive distortions and behavioural experiments to promote change.
