ABSTRACT

A1 C Trauma is the leading cause of death in children between ages 1 and 14 years, accounting for more than 5000 deaths per year. The second most common cause of death varies according to the age group. For children between 1 and 4 years of age, congenital anomalies are the second leading cause of death, whereas for children between 5 and 14 years of age, it is cancer. For children between 0 and 1 year of age, the leading causes of death are congenital anomalies, short gestation and sudden infant death syndrome. Trauma is the fifth leading cause of death in that age group.
