ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the history of specialty General Practitioner (GP) training, the process of applying for training, the structure of the training programme and assessment procedures along the way. General practice training consists of a minimum of 36 months of which between 12 and 24 months are in a general practice environment doing, on average, one out-of-hours session per month. The rest are hospital-based training posts of 3-6 months each, some of which involve specialist work in the community relevant to general practice. Since February 2006, there has been a centralised national process for applying to GP training in the UK, which is managed by the GP National Recruitment Office on behalf of all the UK deaneries. Some trainees wish to undertake their training part-time for a number of reasons. Many doctors from abroad would like to apply for training in the UK.
