ABSTRACT

The emphasis on medical management for conditions once solely the domain of secondary care has transferred to primary care, bringing a new set of responsibilities to general practitioners. This chapter outlines some suggestions and examples of potential routes, interests and skills, which can be developed for posts in academic general practice. It discusses formal pathways, as well as informal pathways for those who have already completed their training and would like to change their career to have more focus on academic practice. The chapter describes the wide spectrum of Academic general practice including research, educational elements or both combined as well as the benefits and pitfalls of such a career. Academic general practice is a relatively new and exciting field, and appeals to many doctors who value the development of non-clinical skills to further enhance research and education in general practice.
