ABSTRACT

This chapter explores quality issues in healthcare and how they impact on the specialty of haematological oncology care. It also explores the impact of gaining accreditation in the haematological oncology setting, as well as the role of the clinical educator in ensuring that quality of care is delivered. Quality in healthcare is not new, and in the literature it can be traced back to the time of Florence Nightingale. Quality has been a prominent component of healthcare policy for the last 10 years. Developmental models assume that learners progress through hierarchical steps and that development occurs through the interaction between the learner and their environment. These models are concerned with how learners make sense of the experience as well as the actual outcome of the clinical education. Collaborative models have emerged more recently, reflecting an increasing interest in collaborative learning, and the value of learning among peers and multi-disciplinary learning.
