ABSTRACT

Resuscitation of a pregnant woman or a new mother is a rare event. However, midwives should always be prepared for both this eventuality, and the possibility that they may, either in the working or social environment, witness and assist at the resuscitation of a member of the public. A statement within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code1 requires all registered personnel to assist at an emergency, be it while on or off duty. The principles of basic life support remain the same, although modifications are required when resuscitating a pregnant woman due to the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.
